PRIME MOVERS was previously known as Students' Impact Initiative.

We replaced "famous speakers and networking" type of conference with "creating solutions and networking" type of conference.

Now, it's your choice to replace "sit and listen" about social challenges with "innovate and solve".

11. MARCH 2019 at University of Economics of Business (WU Wien)

#ODTC19 #LessTalkingMoreDoing

ONE DAY is an annual conference that enables you to create ideas to help and solve societal challenges.

1. IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEMS

The expertise

The conference has three tracks: Waste/Food Waste, Gender Equality and Digitalization. We talk to academics, NGOs and the private sector to identify the current problem areas of each issue.

2. FORMING THE CHALLENGES

Refining the expertise

We structure the information gained about the problem areas and turn these into specific questions to use at the conference.

3. CONFERENCE

This is where you come in!

Experts will introduce the background of the issue you chose. You will work in a group of six on a challenge of this issue supported by the experts. The aim is to come up with solutions in the outputs of: social businesses, app/websites, and educational frameworks!

4. SHAPING THE OUTCOMES

Refinement

Our team will evaluate the outcomes and develop an action plan on the implementation of the chosen idea(s).

5. IMPLEMENTATION

Let's get to work.

Conferences do not have to end in just inspiration and empowerment. This is what sets us apart! Our team will implement the best ideas along with regular progress reports.

Focus areas

These are the three tracks you can choose from to work on. Once you pick one, you will complete all sessions of the track you have chosen.

Waste and food waste

According to EU statistics, an average Austrian wastes more than 550kgs per year, which is 100kgs more than the EU average. Out of this, 20kgs are edible food. How can we contribute to turning this around? We waste 157,000 tonnes of edible food a year in Austria. We talked to academics, members of the civil society and companies in order to identify the current pain points. These are refined and turn into challenges for the conference.

Example challenge for waste: There is stigma and a factor of inconvenience in using second-hand clothing for the general public. How do we make the re-use of clothing mainstream for the general population?

Example challenge for food waste: How do you increase demand for fruits and vegetables that are not shelf-ready?

Keywords: circular economy, textile waste, food waste, gleaning, closing loops, shortening food supply chains,  and more.

Session 0: Learn

Mini-lecture by experts about the background of the challenges that you can choose to work on related to waste and food waste.

Session I: The Vision Lab

Participants pick a specific challenge from our selection and guided by the facilitators, start creating ideas to solve the challenge in interactive groups. You can create ideas for social businesses, apps, websites or educational workshops to teach the issue to children.

Session II: Develop your idea

Participants focus on one of their group’s ideas, and guided by the facilitators, start developing it.

Session III: Presentation

You will display your idea with your group in a marketplace setting. Other groups travel through the marketplace and work on improving the existing ideas. (World Cafe)

Gender equality

According to the EIGE (European Institute for Gender Equality), Austria is under the EU average when it comes to gender equality. Furthermore, Austria has the second-biggest gender pay gap in the EU, with women earning on average 23% less than men. We talked to academics, members of the civil society and companies in order to identify the bottlenecks regarding the progress in terms of gender equality in Austria. These are refined and turn into challenges for the conference.

Example challenge: How can we increase the transparency of gender related initiatives taken by the private sector in Austria in order to incentivize companies that are behind?

keywords: gender stereotyping, gender mainstreaming, gender in media, gender wage gap and more.

Digitalization

96% of people aged 16-24 in the EU are regular internet users today. But research shows that even though they know how to use the internet, they often lack the ability to judge the quality and trustworthiness of internet resources. This makes them particularly vulnerable. As parents are often not better educated in this area, it is the task of the education system to improve digital literacy amongst the younger generation.  We talked to academics, members of the civil society and companies in order to identify the issues in digital literacy. These are refined and turn into challenges for the conference. More to come, stay tuned.

Example challenge: How can you decrease the effects of the echo chambers on social media?

Keywords: echo chambers, information literacy, digital literacy, creation of knowledge online, future of work and data privacy of minors, news verification more.

After ONE DAY: The Conference 2018

What did we do since ODTC 2018?

kindby is an online store where you can rent sustainably produced baby clothing and accessories. It is the first step in our mission to create the best case practice for textiles in e-commerce from a circular economy perspective.

Challenge presented at ODTC ’18: How do you successfully create awareness of data privacy and rights of minors online in a scalable way?

Output chosen by participant group: Educational Framework

Idea from ODTC ’18: “Your online footprint” – a workshop that outlines the digital footprint of minors.

Result: We have implemented this idea in the form of a workshop in our program Mission Liftoff, with access to 40+ schools in Vienna.

Mission Liftoff is a program that helps teachers teach theirs students about sustainability, gender equality and challenges of digitalization. This happens in two ways; one, the PRIME MOVERS team does a workshop for your class on one of these topics, or teachers can download our workshops as lesson plans to facilitate the workshops on their own. The lesson plans are designed for teachers who are not experts on the issues.
